So we’ve gathered a list of 9 FREE or low-cost ideas to help you plan a fun weekend with the kids, without breaking the bank. Every activity on the list will cost a family of four $30 or less, though most cost much less than that!!
**UPDATED February 9th with 3 more exciting, FREE/low-cost events for families!! Thanks to all those who commented and messaged me with these additional amazing things to do!
February 17th-February 19th visit the farm in Colborne for a tour and fun activities! There is also a shop that sells a wide range of alpaca products. Tours are $10 for adults, $5 for children and the under 5 crowd is free!
February 16-18th will be full of fun at the Winter Carnival in Tweed! The Carnival includes over two-dozen family-friendly events including a bonfire, s’more making, teen dance, kids’ games, free public skating, craft/bake sale, chili contest, pancake breakfast, an Improv Musical by Tweed & Company Theatre, chainsaw carving demo, and MORE! Times and details of the various activities and events can be found here.
I recently walked this trail with my baby and two year old and fell in love with it. The trail is only 1.5 km so it is perfect for little toddler and preschooler legs. PLUS the creek, bridges and giant rock make it exciting enough to keep those little legs motivated to keep moving!
But this is just one of MANY parks and trails in the Quinte area. Check out this list to find a trail near you and get outside with the kids. The best part of this activity is that it is absolutely FREE.
Skate on an Outdoor Rink in Batawa
Another FREE and oh-so-Canadian option is to plan a day of outdoor skating at the Batawa Lions Club Outdoor Rinks, located at the Batawa Community Centre. Volunteers from the Lions Club maintain the rinks and they regularly update their Facebook page with the rink conditions. There are also public washrooms and a warm-up room available, making it perfect for families with little ones!

The time of day is perfect for little ones who take naps to enjoy their first movie-going experience.
